Java is not mandatory to learn Selenium. You can use any programming language like Java, python, javascript, ruby etc. You can use python and selenium if you are familiar with python. The reason why java is used widely is since java is an old language, most people are good with java and its easier for those people to use java with selenium. Also there are a lot of library files available in java that makes your projects easier.
