Warli painting is traditional tribal art from Maharashtra. Warli is the name of a tribe which resides in Thane district on northern outskirts of Mumbai. Traditionally, only women practiced this art on the interior walls of their mud houses. It is painted on brick red, charcoal, cow dung based surface using only white colour made from paste of rice, gum & use bamboo stick for drawing.
The specialty of these paintings is, it is made of two dimensional figures consist of geometrical shapes, lines & dots which are derived from nature. Ex. Circle from Sun, Triangle from mountain & Parallel lines from birds etc and occupies maximum pictures & themes in small space.
This art denotes their social life, folk stories, folk dance, festivals, celebration, God /Goddess, farming & nature’s beauty in different forms. This folk art has became popular for its unique simplicity & fervor for life.
