Renu sundriyal We do know that in times long before the earliest written record, carving, engraving, and painting were practiced at the highest level. The cave paintings of Lascaux and Altamira caused a sensation once it was established that they were genuine, and truly the work of Paleolithic artists. Pablo Picasso is credited with statements saying that they had never been equaled right up to his own time. We also know that those populations had music. The fragments of a flute have been found that we believe was last played around 27,000 years ago. They were reassembled, and the flute played again, tuned in the pentatonic scale, much used in folk music and in pop today. We don’t know whether they told stories, or composed poetry, or danced, but it would be silly to think they did not. They did not have writing, but probably had a language just as elegant in its grammar and vocabulary as the English I’m writing here. read less
