Here are some examples of the Arts and Crafts movement:
    • Red House: Designed by William Morris and Philip Webb, this house in Bexleyheath is considered the first Arts and Crafts building. It features a steep tile roof, an asymmetrical structure, and gothic features. The interior was decorated with murals by Edward Burne-Jones.

    • Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales: Produced by Morris & Co., this 1896 edition is elaborately decorated with latches securing the binding.

  • The Gamble House: Designed by the Greene and Greene architectural firm, this house in Southern California features exposed joinery and stained glass.

  • Wightwick Manor: This Wolverhampton manor features original Morris textiles.

  • David Parr House: This Cambridge house is another example of Arts and Crafts architecture.

  • Bungalow: A quintessential Arts and Crafts building in America, the bungalow is a single-family dwelling with a prominent porch, hipped roof, and built-in furniture.

  • Rose Valley: Founded in 1901 by William Lightfoot Price, this Utopian Arts and Crafts community in Pennsylvania produced artistic handicrafts, including furnishings, pottery, metalwork, and bookbinding.

The Arts and Crafts movement was a response to the Industrial Revolution and promoted traditional craftsmanship over machine methods. It was characterized by:

  • Locally sourced materials
  • Simple shapes and asymmetrical designs
  • A color palette of organic greens, blues, yellows, and browns
  • Nature-inspired patterns for wallpaper
  • Sturdy wooden furniture with inlay and little adornment
  • Plentiful lighting to allow views of nature outside
  • Crafted lights with Tiffany-style stained glass
  • Hammered and distressed metal accent pieces
