I've taught the same students for years, so I've learned to track real progress over time and catch early when a student is memorizing instead of understanding. I don't move to the next topic until a student can solve a new question on their own, not just repeat what we practiced. I've taught five students over the years, and I've seen most of them go from disliking a subject to actually enjoying it. I keep parents updated on how their child is doing, not just at exam time, but along the way, so there are no surprises. I'm patient with students who feel shy to ask questions, but every class still has a clear goal.
