Pointer points to the address of a variable by storing the address in it.

So address variables store address of data variables and in any assignment the LHS and RHS should be of the same type, either address variables (or equivalent) or data variables (or equivalent). read less

Every variable is having its own address and sometime we need to work on memory addresses. Pointer is special variable which is used to store memory address of another variable of same type.

To understand the pointer concept, first you need to understand the concept of memory management. The pointer variable points to the memory of a normal variable or function.

Just remember Pointer is a reference not actual object.

First you need to remove the phobia. Do not think that pointer is something different. Start from the very basics that pointer is just like any other variable. After that, rest of the things will fall through.

Pointers are aptly name: they "point" to locations in memory. Think of a row of safety deposit boxes of various sizes at a local bank. Each safety deposit box will have a number associated with it so that you can quickly look it up. These numbers are like the memory addresses of variables. A pointer in the world of safety deposit box would simply be anything that stored the number of another safety deposit box. Perhaps you have a rich uncle who stored valuables in his safety deposit box, but decided to put the real location in another, smaller, safety deposit box that only stored a card with the number of the large box with the real jewelry. The safety deposit box with the card would be storing the location of another box; it would be equivalent to a pointer. In the computer, pointers are just variables that store memory addresses, usually the addresses of other variables. read less

I suggest you to go through the book entitled "Understanding Pointers in C" by Yashavanth Kanetkar. One of the best book to become master in Pointers.

You can go through the stanford university session on pointers. It's easy. Or you can contact us so that we can also help you on this.
