What would happen to Adobe Photoshop/random software if somebody made a much better substitute of it and for free?

Nothing will happen. Because everything depends on learning curve and community. Community of adobe products today are in millions. Plus already developed plugins tutorials and pipelines of other softwares which integrate themselves with adobe has a huge network. Adobe is industry standard. No one can replace the adobe as it has become a habit of artists who teach and who gets taught. Something can never be replaced and adobe is one of them. Example -- BLENDER is free 3d animation software capable of doing miracles. Even Marvel has blender artists. Still its not industry standard. Autodesk products cinema4d zbrush etc has the grip because of the huge community it has. Blender even being free and capable of doing exactly the same things that other softwares can do even better than industry standard softwares at some point, still its not the industry standard.
