Q8:
A factory has two machines A and B. Past record shows that machine A produced 60% of the items of output and machine B produced 40% of the items. Further, 2% of the items produced by machine A and 1% produced by machine B were defective. All the items are put into one stockpile and then one item is chosen at random from this and is found to be defective. What is the probability that it was produced by machine B?

Solution :

Step 1: Definition of Events

Let the sample space be the set of all items produced by the factory. We define the following events:

  • $E_1$: The event that the item is produced by Machine A.
  • $E_2$: The event that the item is produced by Machine B.
  • $A$: The event that the chosen item is defective.

Step 2: Assigning Probabilities to Events

Based on the provided data, we define the prior probabilities [Per the Law of Total Probability]:

  • $P(E_1) = 60\% = 0.60$
  • $P(E_2) = 40\% = 0.40$

The conditional probabilities of producing a defective item given the machine are:

  • $P(A|E_1) = 2\% = 0.02$
  • $P(A|E_2) = 1\% = 0.01$

Step 3: Calculating Total Probability of a Defective Item

The total probability $P(A)$ that an item is defective is given by the formula [By the Law of Total Probability]:

$P(A) = P(E_1) \cdot P(A|E_1) + P(E_2) \cdot P(A|E_2)$

Substituting the values:

$P(A) = (0.60 \times 0.02) + (0.40 \times 0.01)$

$P(A) = 0.012 + 0.004 = 0.016$

Step 4: Applying Bayes' Theorem

We are required to find the probability that the defective item came from Machine B, which is $P(E_2|A)$. [By Bayes' Theorem]:

$P(E_2|A) = \frac{P(E_2) \cdot P(A|E_2)}{P(E_1) \cdot P(A|E_1) + P(E_2) \cdot P(A|E_2)}$

$P(E_2|A) = \frac{0.40 \times 0.01}{0.016}$

$P(E_2|A) = \frac{0.004}{0.016}$

$P(E_2|A) = \frac{4}{16} = \frac{1}{4} = 0.25$

Visual Representation of Probability Distribution

Start Machine A (0.6): Defective (0.02) Machine B (0.4): Defective (0.01)

Final Solution: The probability that the defective item was produced by machine B is $0.25$ or $25\%$.
