Q11:
A manufacturer has three machine operators A, B and C. The first operator A produces 1% defective items, where as the other two operators B and C produce 5% and 7% defective items respectively. A is on the job for 50% of the time, B is on the job for 30% of the time and C is on the job for 20% of the time. A defective item is produced, what is the probability that it was produced by A?
Solution :
Step 1: Definition of Events
Let $E$ be the event that the item produced is defective. Let $A_1, A_2,$ and $A_3$ be the events that the items are produced by operators A, B, and C respectively.
- $P(A_1) = 50\% = 0.5$
- $P(A_2) = 30\% = 0.3$
- $P(A_3) = 20\% = 0.2$
[By the Principle of Exhaustive Events, $\sum P(A_i) = 0.5 + 0.3 + 0.2 = 1.0$]
Step 2: Conditional Probabilities of Defectives
The probability of producing a defective item given the operator is as follows:
- $P(E|A_1) = 1\% = 0.01$
- $P(E|A_2) = 5\% = 0.05$
- $P(E|A_3) = 7\% = 0.07$
Step 3: Calculation of Total Probability $P(E)$
Using the Law of Total Probability, the total probability that a randomly chosen item is defective is given by: [Per the Law of Total Probability]
$P(E) = P(A_1)P(E|A_1) + P(A_2)P(E|A_2) + P(A_3)P(E|A_3)$$P(E) = (0.5 \times 0.01) + (0.3 \times 0.05) + (0.2 \times 0.07)$
$P(E) = 0.005 + 0.015 + 0.014 = 0.034$
Step 4: Applying Bayes' Theorem
To find the probability that the defective item was produced by operator A, we calculate $P(A_1|E)$ using Bayes' Theorem: [Per Bayes' Theorem]
$P(A_1|E) = \frac{P(A_1) \cdot P(E|A_1)}{P(E)}$$P(A_1|E) = \frac{0.5 \times 0.01}{0.034}$
$P(A_1|E) = \frac{0.005}{0.034} = \frac{5}{34}$
Final Solution: The probability that the defective item was produced by operator A is $\frac{5}{34}$ or approximately $0.147$.
