While English is considered a part of the West Germanic group, as are Scots and Frisan, and is deemed to have been mutually intelligible during the migration period(4th to 6th Centuries AD), it is not understandable today, as it has evolved so much. I do have some German friends, and I can say for sure that I do not understand German. I believe the same to be true for Dutch as well.
