A covalent bond is formed between two atoms by sharing electron pairs.
A covalent bond is helpful for carbon as a carbon atom has 4 electrons in its valence shell which are very difficult to lose to gain stable configuration, nor it can gain 4 electrons. So the only way is to share these four outer electrons and form covalent bonds. By doing so, carbon gets to form various compounds with many functions accounting for the usefulness of carbon even in living things.
