Chemical equations show how reactants (the starting materials) change into products. The law of conservation of mass tells us that the total mass of the reactants must equal the total mass of the products ie "mass can neither be created nor destroyed".
To make sure this is true, we balance chemical equations by adjusting the coefficients, which are the numbers in front of the chemical elements/compounds on both sides of the equation.
Na + H3O → NaOH + H2 is already balanced.
