First Generation - Vacuum Tubes were used. But they were replaced by magnetic tapes and magnetic drums as vacuum tubes were large, expensive and get heat up easily. Second Generation- Transistors were used. They were small, fast , powerful and used less energy. But, heating problem still persists. Third Generation- Integrated Circuits (ICs) were used. They were very small, compact, very fast, no heating problem and were powerful. Fourth Generation- Microprocessor were used. It stored the data in binary form (0 and 1). We are working in this generations. Examples are- laptop,palmtop etc. Fifth Generation- Supercomputers are included in this generation. We are striving to achieve this type of computers. These are the fastest computers.
