SILAMBAM, WEST MAMBALAM (An Alliance of Sri Bharatalaya) is run by SudhaLakxmi VinodhKumar, the Artistic Director of the institution. It has currently grown with a new branch at Mylapore.
Sudha is a graceful Pandanallur Style Bharatanatyam dancer and had the privilege of being under the tutelage of Padmasri Prof Sudharani Raghupathy from the early age of five.
Hailing from a family with a rich musical heritage, brought up in an atmosphere encompassed with music and dance, SudhaLakxmi is the granddaughter of renowned Vaggeyakara Padmabhushan Vidwan Madurai Sri.N.Krishnan. In addition to dance, Sudhalakxmi also had her initial music training under violin Vidwan Guru Srinivasa Iyengar, Smt T.Krishnaveni and Padmabhushan Vidwan Madurai Sri N Krishna. Besides Bharathanatyam and vocal, Sudha is also trained in Theory of Dance and Nattuvangam.
At Sri Silambam, we teach not only Bharatanatyam, but also Marthagraham techniques that make the body flexible for the art form. It requires a performer to understand and appreciate music to be able to express the bhava by assimimilating the mood of the composer and enjoy the dance form. We help students appreciate and understand classical music too, making them realize that music and dance are inseparable entities. Talam or Rhythm as it is otherwise called is another vital component in classical dance and we indulge students to learn Nattuvangam too to improve their rhythmic sense.
Overall this course would help students kindle their interest, imagination and enthusiasm towards the classical art form; making them not just great performers but also help them carry this great legacy to the coming generations. We welcome you to be part of this course
