It is a good question to think. Why wavelength is used to detect the colours, instead of frequency. Half the answer is within the question, mate. Wavelength varies, and frequency is constant. Frequencies are noted by the variation of wavelength when travels. Now look at this picture for clear understanding :

Consider both wavelengths as Mechanical springs. Consider the waveforms are coils of the springs. The coils of the 1st spring are carefully packed, whereas the 2nd spring is not closely packed. So after compression, both the spring will be released. So, which one will produce more energy?, Of course, the closely packed. Same like that principle is applied in the EM spectrum to know for a clear view. Even though frequencies are fixed, it cannot be calculated without the variations of wavelength. E.g., In cricket, if you hit the ball out of the ground it's called SIX!!, if you hit the ball to boundary in a ground shot or pitched it said to be FOUR!!!. Same like that, SIX and FOUR are a fixed frequency which is calculated by the variation of hitting the ball as said to be wavelength. It's a nice question to think like that. Think more like that to know and to create things in science.
