Nitrogen fixation is a process of converting free inorganic non-reactive Nitrogen into useful forms like nitrates or ammonia for the plants. It is done biologically and nonbiological.
Biological synthesis includes free fixation by Azototobacter present in soil and symbiotically by Rhizobium bacteria present in the root legumes of the leguminous plants.
Significance- biosynthesis of nucleosides, triphosphates and proteins, ammonia, nitrates.
In agriculture fertilisers(NPK)
Non-biologicaly through lightening; converting free N2 into oxides of nitrogen n then when combines with water forms nitric or nitrous acid which seeps into soil to give ammonia n nitrates in an available way to plants.
