In the previous chapter, you studied Matrix and properties related to Matrix. In Class 12,
Chapter 4, you’ll study Determinants and their properties. The Determinant of a matrix
is the number obtained from a square matrix. The determinant of a matrix ‘A’ is denoted
by det (A), det A, or |A|. Determinants are very useful in analysing linear equations,
finding the inverse of a matrix, and in the field of calculus. Determinants have wide
applications in the field of science, engineering, economics, social sciences, computer
graphics, etc.

Section 4.2 – In this section, you’ll learn about Determinants, Determinant of a matrix

order three.
Section 4.3 – In this section, you’ll acquire knowledge about various properties of a
Determinant. These properties hold true for Determinants of any order.
Section 4.4 – In this section, you’ll learn how to depict the area of a triangle in the form
of a Determinant and study some important observations.
Section 4.5 – In this section, you’ll study how to write the expansion of a Determinant
in a compact form with the help of minors and cofactors.
Section 4.6 – In the previous chapter, you studied the inverse of a matrix. In this
section, you’ll study the condition for the existence of inverse of a matrix and also learn
to prove some important theorems.
Section 4.7 – In this section, you’ll know about some applications of Determinants and
Matrices for solving the system of linear equations in two or three variables and for
checking the consistency of the system of linear equations.
