As someone that has always been attracted to colour and blingy things, Lippan art drew my attention almost immediately. Lippan art is made predominantly on a wooden base with Clay and mirrors which gives it a beautiful 3D effect. This art form originated in Kutch, Gujarat. I have been working on this art form for 4 years now and have also commissioned few customised pieces.

Tanjore Painting Tips

  • You can use paint putty instead of "muck." Though I have never used it, I have seen many experienced artists using putty.
  • While removing gold foil from stones, it helps to make an impression by using a safety pin around the stone first. Then, apply a drop of water. After a few seconds, it will be easier to remove the foil from the stone.
  • If you wish to avoid making Arabic gum, any good glue, such as Fevicol will also work. You will need it anyway for sticking gemstones.
  • If gold paper tears, you can use gold paint to hide those tears. This, however, works only for very small tears. Therefore, be very careful while removing gold foil from stones.
  • Wait for your work to dry completely before proceeding with the next step. Gold foils tear very easily. After sticking the gold foil, use a soft cloth and press gently but firmly. If you do it too softly, the embossed design won't show.
