All turbochargers make some amount of noise – and most people don’t even notice it. However, if the whistling sound gets louder, more noticeable, or changes in any way, it could be symptomatic of a number of different problems, that all warrant further investigation. Potential causes of turbo noise include: • Boost/air/vacuum leak – either on your engine intake, or your intercooler • Compressor wheel damage • Split hoses • Over boosting (potentially caused by a wastegate fault) or poor remap Thankfully, these problems are rarely terminal, and can be repaired/resolved by a competent turbo specialist. read less

Turbochargers are now commonly used in passenger cars especially in the application with diesel engines because of their numerous advantages. The use of this machine greatly improves engine performance, while at the same time allowing pollutant emissions to be reduced. However, one of the important issues to take into account when a turbocharger is used in passenger cars is the whistling noise due to unbalanced forces that can be perceived by the driver, which causes discomfort. The manufacturer's efforts to reduce the whistling noise are centred on reducing the unbalanced forces by a correct balance of rotating parts. However, improving the balance means increasing the manufacturing cost as this process is very expensive. read less

Turbochargers are often blamed for being noisy when in fact it can often be an exhaust gasket vibrating between 2 faces. The multi-layer steel shim type gaskets can, when a flange warps or becomes loose, vibrate between the clamped surfaces causing a screeching noise. This can be hard to diagnose, but will normally start abruptly under acceleration as the turbo boost pressure increases. As the boost increases so does the exhaust manifold pressure stressing the gaskets. If a manifold is warped or has a loose bolt/stud the pressure forces its way past the gasket causing it to vibrate. read less
