UGC stands for University Grants Commission of India (UGC India), UGC India along with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET). NET is a national level open exam to judge the capability of an applicant for recruitment in the role of lecturers, associates, research fellows teachers and professors in Indian universities, academic institutes or colleges. Since 2009, NET qualification is a must for teaching at graduate or post graduate level.

On behalf of UGC, the NET exam is now conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). CBSE conducts the NET exam in 90 cities across India and for 84 languages.

The UGC NET exam is conducted twice in a year – January and July.

The NET exam qualifies an individual candidate for the following:

a) Eligibility for Assistant Professor in Indian colleges and academic institutes
b) Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

Candidates who achieve the JRF are eligible for taking up assistant professor jobs and or pursue post graduation in their subject of specialization.

JRF awardees are also considered for research work by universities, institutions, IITs and other national organizations after certain official formalities.

Eligibility for both Lecturer or JRF

The examination date of UGC Net in 2017 is 22nd January 2017 (Sunday). Admit cards for the same will be available on the UGC official website from 21st December 2016.

If students reach the UGC NET exam center without admit cards, they will not be allowed to write the paper.

The UGC Net exam is conducted for three papers (all in objective type questions):

First (Paper-I) 100 marks 60 out of which 50 questions to be attempted Duration: 1 hour(09.30 am to 10.45 am)
Second (Paper-II) 100 marks 50 mandatory questions Duration: 1 hour(11.15 am to 12.30 pm)
Third (Paper-III) 150 marks 75 mandatory questions Duration: 2½ Hours (02.00 pm to 04.30 pm)

The UGC Net exam makes use of both OMR sheet and test booklet.

Steps to apply:

1) Browse the UGC-NET website

2) Find the link of ‘Fill Application Form’ in the middle of the page.

3) Upload respective digital photo and signature.

4) Pay the UGC NET examination fees.

5) Take a print out of the UGC NET registration confirmation page.

6) Note and save the system generated application number and password that you will be provided.

7) During online registration specify whether you are applying for JRF, Assistant Professor or both.

Applicants from the following categories are given special concession to appear for the UGC NET exam:

Schedule caste (SC), schedule tribe (ST), Person with Disability (PWD), Other Backward Class (OBC)

In case UGC receives incomplete forms, they have the right to disqualify the same.

Terms and conditions for JRF award:

Candidates who qualify JRF are eligible for the fellowship of UGC under various schemes, subject to their finding placement in universities/IITs/institutions. The valid time span of this offer is two years valid from the date of issue of JRF Award Letter. For applicants who have already joined M. Phil./Ph.D.,  courses – the date of commencement of JRF fellowship begins from the date of declaration of NET result or date of their joining.

Eligibility criteria for UGC NET exam:

Academic Qualification:
Candidates with 55% marks in Masters degree or an equivalent course can apply for UGC NET exam.
The marks criteria of UGC NET exam reduces for SC/ST/PWD and OBC classes. It comes down to 50%.
If candidates are still pursuing their Masters degree or are in the final year of their Masters course, then they can only apply for JRF and not Assistant Professor.
Candidates are advised to select their subject of specialization (as in Masters course) or related subjects for UGC NET exam.

Age criteria for UGC NET exam

a) Junior Fellowship Research applicant: 28 years

In case of SC/ST/OBC, women applicants and PWD, the age limit goes up by 5 years.
For candidates with LLM degree, the age relaxation is upto 3 years.

b) Assistant Professor: No age limit

The UGC exam fee can be paid through credit card, debit card or e-challan. In the case of e-challan the payment should be made against Syndicate/Canara/ICICI/HDFC Bank.

The processing fee for Debit Card is 0.75% and for credit card is 1%.

After fee payment, when the payment status becomes OK during online application in CBSE official website, then students can take print out/snapshot  of the confirmation page of UGC exam.

In the case of students who make manual payment through banks, it is the concerned bank who is responsible for altering the student’s application status in CBSE official website. If the payment status does not change, students are to remain in contact with the concerned bank.

There is no refund policy for UGC exam fee (once paid).

Compensatory time in UGC NET exam (for PwD students):

Paper I and Paper II 25 minutes
Paper III 50 minutes

Braille papers are provided for blind students along with usual test booklets.

For PwD students who cannot write with their own hands, a scribe is provided to clear the exam. However, students need to make a request for scribe atleast a week in advance. Students can meet their designated scribe once before the day of the exam. Scribes are paid Rs. 1000 for writing each student’s paper. Center Superintendents are to be contacted for arranging scribes for UGC NET applicants.

Things to carry on UGC NET exam day:

a) Authentic and approved admit card (hardcopy/printout)

b) Photo id proof of the student

c) Pen (blue & black). Use of pencil is strictly prohibited in UGC exam.

Students should report to their respective UGC exam center 2 hours 30 minutes prior to the test time.

Do not wear/carry a watch on the UGC NET exam day. Watches are not allowed inside the exam center. Students can only rely on one wall clock that will be present in the exam center for all.

Use of calculators, mobile phones, pagers, electronic devices, bits of paper, books/note and log tables are not permitted for applicants during UGC NET exam.

No student is allowed to enter the UGC NET exam center prior to 10.45 am for the first session of the test.

An examinee who does not appear for UGC NET exam Paper I – will not be allowed for Paper II or III as well.

Negative marking in UGC NET exam:

There is no negative marking in UGC NET exam.

Canvassing in any form disqualifies a candidate from UGC NET exam.
