Active Voice & Passive Voice:

“Voice means that form of a verb which denotes whether the subject of a sentence does something or whether something is done to the subject.”

1) A verb is in the “Active voice” when its form shows that the person or thing denoted by it does something or is the doer of the active.

2) A verb is in the “passive voice” when its form shows that something is done to the person or thing denoted by the subject.

While changing any sentence from active voice to passive voice, we have to follow 6 rules:

1. Tense will not be changed:

Eg: Mr. Aravind teaches us Grammar

2. “subject” will be changed as object and “object” will be changed as subject:

Eg: (AV) Mr. Aravind teaches us Grammar.

(PV) We are taught Grammar by Mr. Aravind.

3. In passive voice “v3” form has to be written:

‘v3’ form should be followed by “by” preposition.

Eg: (AV) Mr. Aravind teaches grammar.

(PV) Grammar is taught by Mr. Aravind.

4. For all continuous tenses in passive voice “being” has to be written:

Eg: (AV) Mr. Aravind is teaching grammar.

(PV) Grammar is being taught by Mr. Aravind.
