There are two main limitations of wurtz reaction. 1. This reaction produces only symmetrical alkane. If we use two different alkyl halide, the product will be the mixture of different compounds. There are two main limitations of wurtz reaction. 1. This reaction produces only symmetrical alkane. If we use two different alkyl halide, the product will be the mixture of different compounds. It's quite difficult to separate these compounds therefore we always prefer to use one alkyl halide in this reaction. 2. We can only use primary alkyl halide in this reaction. If we use secondary or tertiary alkyl halide, the reaction will be elimination and as a result we will get different product.
