The real rule is this: the article "a" is used before the words that start with the consonant sound,and "an" before the words that starts with the vowel sound. Example:He has a unique point of view on the subject and talked about it for an hour.

Only when the "u" letter gets a vowel sound similar to its pronunciation as in "bud", then it gets an "an" before the word. e.g. an "umpire", an "uncle", an "undergraduate", etc. "An " European is wrong; "a" European is right, because the first letter "E" gets a "U" sound which is not a vowel sound. Similarly, "a" one rupee note is correct, because "one" is pronounced as "wun". read less

It doesn't matter whether the word is written with a vowel or consonant, What is important is whether it is pronounced as a vowel or a consonant. Example: I spent an hour at a University. pronounced as (I spent an our at a yooniversity)
