The Rain forests are known to be found in places receiving more than 230 cms of rainfall and which has a monthly mean temperature of 18C or even higher in the coldest month of the year. They are known to occupy more than 7 % of the earth’s surface and harbour more than 55 per cent of the terrestrial plants and animals of the entire globe. It is known that rain forests are very dense or thick and they receive 200 cms of rainfall annually and the sunlight does not even reach the ground in some of the areas.

The reason why they are also called the evergreen forests is because different trees shed leaves at different times of the year.

Andaman and Nicobar islands, slopes of western ghats, Assam. West Bengal, Odisha are the places where you can find tropical rainforest areas. These areas experience the humid climate and abridged dry season. Rosewood, ebony and mahogany are the trees which are abundant here and the most commercially used.

The tropical rainforests are confined to areas of heavy rainfall. Such areas are in the Western Ghats, upper parts of Assam, Tamil Nadu coast and the island groups of Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar. Areas which receive more 200 cm of rainfall and have a short dry season are the best area for tropical rainforest. Almost all kinds of vegetation; like trees, shrubs and creepers; are found in such a forest. The forest has a multilayered structure. Ebony, mahogany, rosewood, rubber and cinchona are some of the commercially important trees of tropical rainforests. Elephants, monkey, lemur and deer are the common animals in these forests. Apart from them, a large number of birds, bats, sloth, scorpions and snails are also found in tropical rainforests. read less
