A scalar quantity has only magnitude whereas the vector quantity has magnitude as well as direction to its magnitude. Magnitude is a measured numerical value to a physical quantity. Consider a man going 5 m/s on a bicycle towards the north. Then the speed of the bicycle is 5 m/s and velocity is 5 m/s towards the north. Giving direction to speed makes the entity velocity.

There are two meaning to your question as other have already answered GATE as an Graduate Aptitude Test In Engineering and another gate in electronics. In electronics, a logic gate is an physical device implementing boolean function. Yes, it is a physical device. Which you can touch. By boolean function I mean a function which will give you two distinct outcomes. You can take this anomalous to tossing a coin and getting output as either head and tail. Here you can not get any intermediate case. In mathematics or electronics the two distinct outcomes are either true of false. Gate regulate these two condition. According to these states of gate, your system will behave.

If f(x)= f(-x) then the function f(x) is called as even function. Clearly F(x)=f(2)=f(-x)=f(-2) some example are any polynomial function with even power. Let us take another example f(x)=x+2=0 in this function f(2)=2+2=4 and f(-2)=-2+2=0 these are two different values but for --f(2)=-(2)+2=0. Thus we can say that f(-x)=-f(x) the function satisfy this property are known as odd function. Some examples are cos(x) polynomial function with odd degree.
