Ion is a charged species, which means any metal atom when it loses or gains electrons it develops a positive or negative charge on it. For example, Na (sodium) when loses an electron; it becomes Na+ (sodium ion, cation) whereas Cl (chlorine) when gains electron it becomes Cl- (chloride ion, anion).

When we talk about HCl, then first thing comes in picture is there is no metal so no question about ionic.
