I have been in the music industry for the past 10 years and i have been teaching for the past 6+ years. Gonres that i teach - Bollywood (old,contemporary,modern),popular (pop) english songs,blues,rock,funk and improvisation.

I'll start with the advantages - Grit,focus, concentration, willpower, self-confidence, therapeutic benefits, feel good factor,oravnized thinking and execution capabilities.
Disadvantages- you may really struggle for the first few months to train your muscles how to play what you're thinking in your head.
You may develop tendonitis or tennis elbow of you develop a wrong technique of fretting or picking notes.

The guitar is made out of 80% wood and other materials. If not played for a long time it will definitely collect some dust and grime. Coming to the main issue which will be a bowed neck. This happens as the headstock of our guitar really takes upon a lot of string tension a.k.a string pull. So if you need to store your guitar/s destring them and store them at an optimal moisture level.

The guitar has been an integral part of music since the fortys. Just imagine a song say for example sadda haq or rock on or pichle saath dino mein without guitars, It's like having lungs but no air to breathe. In other words music without guitats will be dull and boring.
