What is the geometrical shape of equipotential surfaces due to a single isolated charge?

1 0 4

Praveen Kumar Rao replied | 12/05/2016

sphere centered on the point charge

For an isolated charge the equipotential surfaces are co-centric spherical shells and the distance between the shells increases with the decrease in electric field.

Define mutual inductance and write its S.I. units.

U.K. replied | 11/05/2016

units of mutual inductance is Henry

U.K. replied | 11/05/2016

If two coils of wire are brought into close proximity with each other so the magnetic field from one links with the other then a voltage is generated in the second coil. This phenomenon is called mutual inductance: when voltage is applied in one coil it induces a voltage in another.

Which of the following waves can be polarized (i) Heat waves (ii) Sound waves? Give reason to support your answer.

Shivaji replied | 08/06/2016

heat waves can be polarized because heat waves are transverse waves whereas sound waves cannot be polarized because sound waves are longitudinal waves
Transverse waves can be oscillate in the direction perpendicular to the direction of its propagation but longitudinal waves like sound waves oscillate only along the direction of its propagation , so longitudinal waves cannot be polarized

Write the relationship between angle of incidence “i”™, angle of prism “A”™ and angle of minimum deviations for a triangular prism.

Chaitanya replied | 07/06/2016

i=A+delta m/2

Binita replied | 12/07/2016

D= i+e-A
For minimum deviation,i=e
Dmin = 2i-A

A metallic rod held horizontally along east-west direction, is allowed to fall under gravity. Will there be an emf induced at its ends? Justify your answer.

Chaitanya replied | 07/06/2016

when a metalic rod is held horizantally along east-west direction,is allowed to fall under gravity i.e. it falls from north to south,the intensity of magnetic lines of earth's magnetic field changes through it i.e. the magnetic flux changes and hence the induced emf in it.

A convex lens of focal length 25 cm is placed coaxially in contact with a concave lens of focal length 20 cm. Determine the power of the combination. Will the system be converging or diverging in nature?

Chaitanya replied | 07/06/2016

f1=0.25m,f2=-0.20m,F=(1/f1)+(1/f2)=-1m
since the focal length is negative,system will be diverging in nature.

Binita replied | 05/07/2016

Total power is the sum of the powers of lenses in contact.
P=P1+P2
focal length=1/(Power of lens)
Total Power= 1/.25 + 1/(-.2) =-1D
Since, power is negative, the system will act a diverging lens.

In a double slit experiment using light of wavelength 600 nm, the angular width of the fringe formed on a distant screen is 0.1°. Find the spacing between the two slits.

3 0 4

Dr K Venkateswarlu replied | 12/06/2016

Fringe Width (w)=(lamda X D)/(slit seperation=2d) wher D is seperation b/w plane of slits and screen. therefore 2d=(lamda X D)/w. but for large values of D, angular width (theta in radians)= w/D. Hence finally 2d=lamda/(theta in radians). substituting the given values we get 2d=0.34 mm

Dr K Venkateswarlu replied | 12/06/2016

Spacing b/w two slits (2d)= (lamda)/(theta in radians), where theta is angular width in radians. So substituting the given values, 2d= 0.34 mm

How are side bands produced ?

1 0 3

Side bands are produced by the method of amplitude modulation. It produces two new frequencies (fc + fm) and (fc – fm) around original frequency (fc), which are called side band frequencies.
Upper side band frequency = USB = fc + fm
and Lower side band frequency = LSB = fc – fm.

U.K. replied | 11/05/2016

A sideband is a band of frequencies higher than or lower than the carrier frequency which contain power as a result of the modulation process. All forms of modulation produce sidebands.
he signal components above the carrier frequency constitute the upper sideband (USB), and those below the carrier frequency constitute the lower sideband (LSB).

In an AC circuit in which the applied voltage signal is continually changing from a positive to a negative polarity at a rate determined by the frequency of the supply, as in the case of a sine wave voltage, for example, the capacitor is either being charged or discharged on a continuous basis at a rate determined by the supply frequency.
As the capacitor charges or discharges, a current flows through it which is restricted by the internal resistance of the capacitor. This internal resistance is commonly known as Capacitive Reactance.
it is inversely proportional to the angular frequency and the capacitance and is due to the presence of capacitance in an alternating-current circuit.
