If you are in B.tech first year buy the programming in anci c by Balaguruswamy and practice the problems. You are in 3rd or 4th year take a small problem on strings or arrays try to solve them. eg: Print the vehicle registration numbers whose sum of individual number is 9?

For programming knowledge only and starting of programming I will suggest Let us C by Yashwant Kanetkar. For deep knowledge you can take other book also.

B.Sc in Physics MCA from ACCET-Karaikudi - Anna University Chennai

Start with "C" language. In fact one need to master the logic of a problem to solve than any programming (language) knowledge. Once you master that, language knowledge is just learning syntax & API's of a programming languge. I strongly recommed "C" to anyone who wish to start programming.
