The National Food for Work Programme was launched in November 2004 in 150 most backward districts of the country, identified by the Planning Commission in consultation with the Ministry of Rural Development and the State governments. The scheme was 100 per cent Centrally sponsored. The Act provided 100 days of work guarantee to every rural household whose members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

This scheme was launched in India on June 1997. Major commodities distributed include staple food grains, such as wheat, rice, sugar, and kerosene, through a network of ration shops established in several states across the country.
