"How can one build a self-control app for Ubuntu? I can edit the /etc/hosts file using a script but the sudo user can still revert the changes. Please help." in   IT Courses/Linux

Hello Jana :-). In a linux system the root is called the super user for a reason. The root can do anything. The only way that I know of to restrict is to put a password for the root user. Sudo can do anything on a linux system which can be dangerous or self destructive like deleting everything (happens more often than you think with rm -rf command). So your best bet is to lock your root with password. But most linux distributions don’t allow root users to be accessed. Instead they use sudo to get temporary root privileges. This can be controlled by setting which users are part of the sudo group (If your user account is not part of this group you cannot use sudo for temporary root privileges.) So if the user account is like a Guest account then I suggest you create limited accounts without sudo privileges. You cannot block sites through proxies generally. You may block proxies but it turns into a game of cat and mouse. The ultimate one would be Tor browser which nobody can do much about. The only fool proof solution is to block everything except what you want others to access (like only your company website or something). Blacklists to prevent some sites is difficult because there is so many alternatives. You will probably spend all your time on blocking new sites that people find to circumvent your control. tl;dr Limit the privilege of the user account to not be able to use sudo altogether. (This is what management does at my college for the lab systems with linux) NO sudo - Less hassle. The other one can be limited to a certain extent by firewalls but there is no 100% working solution except if the sole purpose of the network is to connect to an intranet. Thanking You, Ngcc Software Technologies.

"Do you think every computer engineer and computer science student should know how to use Linux? Why?" in   IT Courses/Linux

Hello Shobhitha :-). Not Linux specifically, but Unix systems in general, sure. They are important in many fields. If you can’t find your way around Unix systems you shut yourself out of almost all server side work (although a little is done of MS OSes, and a small buy valuable part on older mainframe Ones). So computer engineers absolutely should. Some people think CS should stick to the more theoretical “sciency” parts of computers. If you think CS should teach noting practical, then you can leave out Unix in general. Personally I think some practical things should be taught, plus as Linux/FreeBSD/NetBSD are all Open Source OSes they could make great platforms for studying all kind of things. VM page replacement algorithms and disk storage systems and such. So they make great experimentation platforms. As a practical matter if your University skimped, go pick it up. Do some command line work. It is enlightening. Do some server work, it too is mind expanding. Go mess with the VM subsystem it is…um… frustrating and fraught with danger. Also enlightening though. Thanking You, Ngcc Software Technologies.

"Have you mastered Linux if you don't need or want a desktop environment?" in   IT Courses/Linux

Hello Manoj :-). I'm no master, but in my experience it largely depends on what you're doing. If you're looking to do a lot of web browsing, then you're probably going to want a desktop environment, unless you like text browsers like Lynx and Elinks. If you're doing some Python programming, fire up Vim or your other favorite text editor and have at it! What, you need to google something? Hope you like those text browsers. If you're creating a server, then there's no need for such a CPU hog as a desktop environment. A simple SSH server will be plenty, as hopefully you weren't intending to only physically access the server! If you're experimenting with a new distribution from a liveCD, but just want to use the command line, sure! Go ahead, but if you wanted to google the features it had, back to those text browsers! (I hear SurfRaw is very helpful). So technically yes, the master of the Linux desktop would be someone who doesn't use a desktop environment at all, and already knows everything there is to know about whatever they're trying to do, just like any good omniscient master should. Then we have those people who only use a window manager like Open Box etc etc. Thanking You, Ngcc Software Technologies.
