People can boast about their grades & marks and so can I, but, the purpose of education, I feel, goes beyond this. It is about making yourself capable enough to create an impact on this society. And this capability can never be developed by the sole motive of securing high grades or getting into a prestigious institution for higher education. Hence, it is important to understand why exactly you are taking a particular course or learning a particular concept. Students, especially at the secondary school level, hardly realize this. Parental pressure can only make the situation worse. The bright ones will still fair better but the remaining ones will take the blame on themselves for their dismal performance. I have witnessed this situation in my family itself. Not everyone is gifted with the same intellect or aptitude but that doesn't mean the not-so-gifted ones can never dream big. I feel it is just that they need a different approach towards learning - an approach where they are able to visualize and get a feel of the concepts, and this is where a genuine teacher can differentiate himself/herself from an ordinary one. And remember, everyone is unique and everyone has the potential to make a meaningful contribution, it is just that he/she needs someone who can make them realize this, and this is where I feel a 'real' teacher (or, rather a mentor) can be of help.
