GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment

The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section of GMAT exam aims to assess the following in a GMAT candidate:

b)  Viewpoints of general and trending topics

c)  English writing capacity

In this section, there is only 1 question, which has to be completed within a 30-minute session. It is an essay or argument where the candidate has to examine and analyze the given argument and also estimate the reasons behind it. Once done, they need to write a critical analysis of the argument in a methodical way to present the answer. Candidates can have various viewpoints on the given argument but, each of the points has to be supported with appropriate examples and explanations. One has to be careful about the usage of right grammar while presenting the answer.

The score for this section is calculated on a scale of 0-6. The essay is given two independent ratings and then an average is considered.

Another method of scoring this answer is through an automated essay-scoring engine. Both the ratings are compared and if it shows a difference of more than one point, an expert reader is brought in, whose decision is to be considered as the final score.
