Overview

I had been doing photography since childhood as it was my family business. After completing my Masters degree in International Business, I took this hobby as profession and being doing all sorts of photography be it portraits, weddings, sports, nature, landscapes, wildlife, festivals and fairs etc.
I started with shooting film both color and black and white. I had spent countless hours in the darkroom to process and print my black and white films.
Then in 1998, I got my first digital camera , scanner , computer and printer and became the first in my city to start digital photography. With time onward, kept on upgrading from a compact digital camera to a presume, then a digital SLR and finally to full frame camera and top of the line lenses.
During this whole tenure , had read several books by the best authors in the World and also attended few short workshops with some top photographers of India.
Meanwhile I guided few students casually with their technical problems and realized my potential and a flair for teaching. Thus started taking class on photography on individual basis. And the story continues.

"Is raw file better than jpeg? When I compare raw with jpeg file after clicking from my camera, both look same. What's the difference?" in   Photography, Photography/Basics of Photography

Shooting in raw is definitely a better option. Though comparing raw and jpeg, both look the same but they are not. JPEG files are obtained by the processing done by the camera. If you have chosen an incorrect white balance, there is no way you can get 100% correct colors even with photoshop, whereas with raw this is achievable. Besides white balance, you can adjust exposure, shadows, highlights, contrast, colors, vibrance, individual colors, sharpness and many more with raw files. The flip side is that you need to learn light room to get the true benefits of raw. Also raw files need more storage space as the file size is bigger. My preference is to select the option RAW+JPG in camera, so I get both the files. If I have to just give the proofs i use jpeg files, but if i want professional results , I always process raw files. I had seen magic with my raw files

"Should I use flash during day time while taking portraits ?" in   Photography, Photography/Fashion Photography, Photography/Basics of Photography

If you want soft results avoid flash, as the use of flash helps provide lighting as well as renders sharpness to the subject. Daytime shooting has three situations, one when the subject's face is in direct sunlight, second the subject is in against light means sunlight from subject's back and the third when the subject is in shade. Though flash can be used in all the three situations but it has to used differently. In the first case when subject is in direct sunlight , flash can be avoided, but if used can reduce the shadow under the eyes and under the chin. A direct undiffused flash with less power can be fired to provide a fill light.Second situation when the subject is against light. you can create a silhouette without using a flash, but if you desire to show the face, flash becomes a necessity. Try using flash with a diffuser (a small soft box) off camera from a angle to get beautiful and pleasing portraits. Third situation when the subject is in shade, without flash you get soft portraits, but if you want crisp details, flash is a must. Again try using it with some diffuser placed in from of the flash. Though an elaborate subject, I hope I made few things clear.

"How different is digital photography from earlier day’s photography?" in   Photography

This could be really long topic but just a few points I would like to mention are as follows Photography changed in many ways by going digital in terms of ease of use : 1) Earlier you put a film of 100,200 or 400 ISO and it was a fixed factor for the entire film but now in digital one can click every picture at a different ISO upto 6400, 12800 without extra investment 2) One can immediately view the image captured and re click if the image is technically or aesthetically not good thus making learning easy Cons : Though one saves on films and prints but the initial cost to buy a digital SLR is higher as compared to film SLRs. Immediate viewing and digital manipulation had made photographers a bit casual in their approach and hence they click more pictures then needed . This creates a lot of digital junk in computer. Above all those who think there is no cost attached to per click on digital SLR are mistaken as every Digital SLR has a shutter life and after that particular number either shutter needs repairing or it wont give perfect shutter speeds.
