As you know petrol and kerosene are obtained from crude oil. Crude oil is simply a mixture of all these oils and other byproducts of petroleum. A fractionating column is used to separate these oils. The oils are boiled and are extracted at different boiling points. Just like the distillation of water where water is boiled and cooled off to get distilled water. Crude oil is boiled at a very high temperature and collected at different fractions with different boiling points.

Steam produces more burns as it is in a vapour phase. When water vapourises it requires heat. So a boiling water has more heat but not as much heat as steam. Steam is vapour and boiling water is in process of becoming steam.

There are no other known metals of such malleability at that time.
