Another point of view: How GOOD do you want to be able to speak German? What is an expert? An general expert owns a vocabulary of, lets say, up to 10 000 words. A specialist in his (higher) profession needs ~5000 words + specific words. If, ... if you are able to learn 10 new words every day (together with the genders and plurals of the nouns, the times of the irregular verbs, the correct usage of the prepositions, aso.) you can calculate the time by yourself. And additionally the grammar. The proverbs, the German way of speaking and the German pronounciation. So it depends on you and on your concrete aim... ;) read less
