"Which is older - Java or C?" in   IT Courses/Programming Languages/C Language

C got introduced in 1971 whereas Java came into the existence in 1991 and got officially released in 1994.

"Why are there so many programming languages if most programmers use C, C++, Java, and PHP?" in   IT Courses/Programming Languages/C Language

It is just that each language has its own strong points and using that language would be quicker than with others. C and C++ are a little hard when it comes to maintainability since the code base with such applications are really large. So people tend to go for more managed languages like C# and Java. For places where you need to quickly prototype applications or say newly developed algorithms, you could go for Python. Sometimes it is just the coupling to the OS. Good examples would be Apple’s programming language for Mac and iOS. They work really well due to some OS level performance tweaks. One could go on and on about the various strong points about each programming language. You could use any programming language in place of other (which has support) but it would just be time consuming if the later is better at the particular job than the former. In the end if you see there is just one “language” that the computer understands, Binary. Just for abstraction consider Assembly. If assembly is all you need to solve anything, then why was C invented. It just made a whole lot better. It is the same story for every programming language.

"Why is the C language platform-dependent, and why is Java platform-independent?" in   IT Courses/Programming Languages/C Language

In C, machine code is different for different processor architecture, and thus could not run natively on incompatible platforms unless you have a emulator to help you out. But in Java, the bytecode i.e, remains consitent across the platforms and just need a platform dependent JVM for its execution. It is bytecode fromat, which make a piece of code written in java platform independent.

"Why is a compiler used for language C and not an interpreter?" in   IT Courses/Programming Languages/C Language

C is a structured programming language. It’s code consists of many macros, function calls references etc., which is required to be decoded before program’s execution can take place, so that any error is detected well before execution. Interpreted languages on the other hand execute statement by statement, hence any error in program is determined only when exexution reaches that particular statement with error.

"Why should I learn Python over C or C++?" in   IT Courses/Programming Languages/C Language

Advantages of any modern interpreted language over C++. Like any tradeoff, these are advantages in some situations and disadvantages in others. Situations where you don't want these conveniences are becoming more rare, though, as hardware gets even faster and high-level language implementations get even more efficent. No compile step. Write your code in my_program.py, then run it with python my_program.py. No memory management. You don't have to explicitly allocate memory for new variables, and you don't have to explicitly free memory you're done with. The interpreter will allocate memory for you and free it when it's safe to do so. High-level native data types. Strings, tuples, lists, sets, dictionaries, file objects and more are built-in. As an example, {"x": "y"} defines a dictionary (hash table) with string "x" as a key and string "y" as its value. Specific advantages of Python: Especially clean, straightforward syntax. This is a major goal of the Python language. Programmers familiar with C and C++ will find the syntax familiar yet much simpler without all the braces and semicolons. Duck typing. If an object supports .quack, go ahead and call .quack on it without worrying about that object's specific type. Iterators, generators and comprehensions. To get the first character of every line in a file, you'd write: file = open("file.txt") list_of_first_characters = [line[0] for line in file] file.close() This iterates over the file only once. (These particular features are just the tip of the iceberg of simple built-in syntax for high-level language features. Check out decorators next if you're intrigued.) Huge standard library. Just to pick some random examples, Python ships with several XML parsers, csv & zip file readers & writers, libraries for using pretty much every internet protocol and data type, etc. Great support for building web apps. Along with Ruby and JavaScript, Python is very popular in the web development community. There are several mature frameworks and a supportive community to get you started.
