• Ionic Bond: The bond came into existence by complete transference of the electron from one atom to another is called an ionic bond (e.g., Sodium Chloride, NaCl)
• Covalent Bond: The bond that came into existence due to the mutual sharing of electrons by both the atoms is called a covalent bond (e.g., Hydrogen, Oxygen, Methane, i.e. H2, O2, CH4).
• Also, there is one more type of covalent bond. Both the electrons are shared by only one atom, and the other atom has no contribution; this particular type of shared bonding is called a coordinate bond (e.g., ammonium Chloride, NH4Cl).

There is an important property called CATENATION which exists in many elements. Due to this property, elements of a specific type can make long-chain compounds.
