Basically, the definition says any number which can be represented in the form of p/q where q is not equal to zero is called rational number. But going deep into its concept, its the extended form of number system as we only have distinct numbers to represent any quantity like natural numbers, whole numbers, integers. The concept of fraction comes under the rational numbers as if we associate any rational number with some specific quantity or proportion, it is called fraction of something. The need to develop rational numbers is for eg. if we have to divide 1 chocolate among our 4 friends hen what quantity each will get, there we take help of rational numbers which says 1/4. Moreover, rational numbers can be negative as well as positive and there are infinite number of rational numbers.
