Ruby code is typically a bit less verbose and easier to read. This means less lines of code and presumably less documentation. For example, you can read Ruby like english...from left to right..using techniques like method chaining. Python has the same functionality, but you sometimes have to maintain the entire parsetree in your head and jump around to understand a few lines of terse code.
On the other hand, Rubyists tend to forget about back compatibility...when they find a new and better syntax, they also deprecate the old one, forcing the programmer to be prettier. So if you need to install an old gem you sometimes end up re-writing it just to see if it is useful.
