In the above example, the iron(III) oxide is the oxidising agent. A reducing agent reduces something else. In the equation, the carbon monoxide is the reducing agent. Oxidising agents give oxygen to another substance. Reducing agents remove oxygen from another substance. Its a deep theory in terms of electron transfer. read less

Simply put, Oxidation is the loss of electrons or gain of oxygen molecules and Reduction is just the opposite where oxygen molecules are lost or electrons are gained during a chemical process. Example would be extraction of iron from its ore - Fe2O3 + 3CO -> 2Fe + 3Co2

In terms of oxygen transfer: oxidation is gain of oxygen, reduction is loss of oxygen. In terms of hydrogen transfer: loss of H is oxidation and gain of H is reduction. In terms of electron transfer: electron loss is oxidation and gain is reduction.
