Learning Physics for IIT JEE mains, advanced & NEET

Many of the students preparing for JEE/NEET often find physics as the most challenging subject compared to others. This is because Physics needs a slightly different way of learning, and students do not identify it. If appropriately learnt and practised, Physics would be the most straightforward subject and can boost rank.

Until 10th std, studying science involves learning how basic things around us work, and the exams involve mostly reproducing what we learnt.  When it comes to learning Physics in class 11th, 12th and for competitive exams, it involves more of applying principles we learnt in various scenarios. Physics in competitive exams like JEE and NEET is more application-oriented. The problem-solving ability is mainly tested and not our ability to memorise and reproduce.

So, firstly while learning a topic in Physics, it's not essential to remember definitions or byheart formulae. When you are studying a principle, you need to connect to it. Read the textbooks as if you are reading a storybook and try to understand what the sentences are trying to say and try to picturise and animate in mind. Try to correlate them with things you see outside. Imagination is more important. And then start questioning everything you read, 'why only this way why not that way'. Try explaining whatever you understand to a classmate or a friend. The better you can you tell, the deeper would be your understanding. Try to answer their questions too, and you will drastically improve yourself.

When it comes to problem-solving, it's not about gathering all the data given in the question and trying to fit it in any formula you know. This can only work for very few problems. It's essential to understand the issue entirely and try to imagine what could happen in the given scenario with common sense and try to find a suitable principle that we can apply (Not a formula). And lastly, it is mandatory to be excellent and fast at math. Often problems involve more of math than physics. Physics can help us understand the question and application of a principle and finding a way to solve. But, the next steps involve mathematics, and only math can lead us to the final solution.

Yeah, all this requires considerable effort and long term practising just like any other great thing in life. It's essential to start it doing at some point. Take the first step.

Hope it helps.

All the best.
