P4 – How To Tell Wild Animals

The poem “How to Tell Wild Animals”, by Carolyn Wells humorously describes the characteristics of various wild animals that make them unique and identifiable. The poetess describes the features of many wild animals that include – the Royal Bengal Tiger, leopards, bears, the Asian Lion, hyenas, crocodiles, and chameleons. While the poetess has described the Asian Lion as a significant and ‘tawny’ beast that roars in the jungle; the lion has a yellowish-brown skin, as signified by the usage of the word tawny. The roar of the lion is said to be so fierce that it can make a person ‘die’ out in fear.

In the words of the poetess, the Royal Bengal Tiger is considered as a noble wild beast. This is because of his appearance, with black stripes over a yellowish – orangish body. The poetess says that people identify a tiger just before death, as they are quick predators and hunt from behind.

According to the poetess, a leopard has peppered spots all over their body. The poetess says that the leopard hunts its prey by leaping on. She says that it will do no good to the person who is hunted to cry in pain, as the leopard will continuously jump over the body of their prey before consuming them.

The poetess is referring to the bear when she describes the animal that hugs its prey. This is because the bear does this to the extent of choking its prey to death. She warns the reader that the bear might be encountered in a person’s yard, as they are often known to intrude on human settlements.

In the words of the poetess, the hyena is an animal that can be recognised by its smiling face. On the other hand, the crocodile can be identified by its weeping face. This information is deemed to be essential for novice people who are new in identifying animals.

Chameleons are different from normal lizards because they can change the colour of their skin to camouflage with the tree they are sitting on. This ability allows them from unsuspecting predators. The poetess says that if someone notices no animal, reptile, bird or insect sitting on the branches of a tree, a chameleon may be sitting on it.
