It would be a great asset if you were to interact with the locals in your travels to China/HK/Taiwan. If you were to visit these places it would help you with bargaining, getting around in a Taxi, getting on a bus, buying train tickets, eating at street vendors, local places when there is no English menu and just in general talking to locals and getting to know the culture first hand. You can compound this if you plan to stay an extended stay for business or work. «less

Chinese does not have an phonetic alphabet like all Western languages. Instead, it has picture-based characters, each having a single-syllable pronunciation. Each character is used alone as a word or combined with other characters to form compound words.

Foremost thing is to get hold of a trainer who will teach you basic level of Chinese. Chinese language has certain tones and sounds that do not exist in Hindi. Do not try to learn this language on your own at beginners level. Once you've started and know the basics, then sky is the limit when it comes to learning any language.
