How much time is required for learning about Indian Raagas in terms of Vocal. That is looking for basics of indian music & then to learn over a extended period in short spells of say THREE months & again three months.... like that. Best books to start with for a person in Age group of 25 years. (female)

Minimum a year of time if you do a regular practice. Carnatic swaravali basic text books are available in the music shops and online to buy them

Vinod Kumar replied | 07 Apr

The basic parental 72 raagas will take an year of time. There are many other derived raagas also which will definitely take more years to learn and improvise. The parental raagas are very important. If one expertise in the basic parental raagas, then the other derived Rashad can easily be learn.

Karnatic or Sastriya sangeetham ( traditonal music) got its name from the South Indian composer-musicians Purandara das, Thyagaraja,Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri and many more descendants. They all hail from South India and hence the name became Carnatic music.

0 0

Pavani Devulapalli replied | 02/10/2016

Kalyani is a best example for prati madyama raaga and In shankarabharanam, one gives more gamakam (or oscillation) to R, M and D, while keeping N and G relatively plain. Pretty much the reverse is true in Kalyani

Mrudanga accompaniment is complete different when compared to tabla accompayment. Let me just put is very briefly, in tabla accompayment the tablist plays plain theka (taal) without much improvisation while playing with a vocalist and does show a little more than that while accompanying a instrumentalist. But he does show his skills when the lead artist sings/plays the main composition in repetitive loops. The tablist plays different kaidas in this span of time and comes to the sum/sama and displays his/her talent.

When it comes to Mrudanga, the accompanying artists does improvise as and how the lead artists improvise. And also the Mrudanga artist trys to follow the lead artist in various ways. Also displays the percussion related calculations in a very elaborate manner when the lead artist gives scope for the percussion artists to perform the percussive calculations. This is commonly referred to as tani avartana. «less
