Dear aspirant, in UPSC preparation you have to study all subjects.so start studying newspaper and NCERT books.after completing NCERT books you join in coaching school. without completing don't join. all coaching school will teach from 40% to above. from 0% to 40% you have to learn from NCERT books. so it take at least 3 months. then start joining an institute or own preparation for mains will take 8 months. you have spend 1 year as solid time for preparation. and need smart work and a hard work in all stages of the preparation. you need writing skill to score marks in mains examination . "What is the pattern of net exam" in   Exam Coaching/UGC NET Exam Coaching

The test, which will be conducted in three phases (one paper in each phase) will comprise of mainly objective type questions in two distinct sessions. As per the information available on UGC’s official website, the first session will comprise of two phases - Paper I and II carrying 100 marks each. Paper I will include 60 questions out of which 50 are to be attempted, whereas Paper II will include 50 questions (all compulsory). The allotted time is 75 minutes per paper. Meanwhile, the second session will comprise of only one paper (Paper III) carrying 150 marks. Paper III will include 75 questions (all compulsory) for which, candidates will be allowed a maximum of 2.5 hours. The questions in Paper I (9:30 am to 10:45 am) will be mostly of general nature, aimed to evaluate the research/teaching aptitude, comprehension, reasoning ability and divergent thinking in the candidates. For each correct answer, the candidate will get two marks. Paper II (10:45 am to 12:00 pm) will include 50 objective type questions - all compulsory - from the subject picked by the candidate. Each correct will earn the candidate two marks. Paper III (1:30pm to 4:00 pm) will include 75 objective type questions (each carrying two marks) from the subject chosen by the candidate. Like Paper II, all questions in this paper are compulsory. The questions in Paper II and III will be designed to cover the entire syllabus, including the electives. The candidates will require marking their answers for questions of all three papers on the Optical Mark Reader (OMR) sheet provided alongside the Test Booklet. For details, including how to fill up the OMR sheet, candidates can visit the official UGC website.
